Here’s a film whose reputation seems to have declined over the years. Highly regarded and hugely successful when it first came out, it now seems a bit static with a residence that is a tad too predictable. The main attraction of the film was always the mesmerising and award-winning performance of Maggie Smith. But today some people might gather her acting overly mannered or too theatrical. However, I am not one of them. I have always opinion that Maggie Smith was one of the finest actresses ever. And a suitable eccentric.

The film consists of lots and lots of dialogue delivered in quaint Scottish accents. (The accents are not as great a plight for American audiences as they are in other films such as Gregory’s Girl.) There is an occasional examine of mature Edinburgh but, for the most share, the settings are confined to interiors. The film is directed and photographed professionally and unobtrusively. The 1930’s period is nicely byt subtly evoked. The one discordant element is the rather twee musical bag by Rod McKuen. The emphasis, as in a play, is on the characters.

The supporting cast are fair that but most of them manage to have their moments. Robert Stephens (married to Maggie Smith at the time) is quite great as a slightly bohemian art teacher. Gordon Jackson steps somewhat out of his usual typecasting to recount a wimp of a music teacher. Celia Johnson is positively nasty as the jealous and strait-laced headmistress. Best of all is Pamela Franklin as Miss Brodie’s pet pupil - a nicely dismal and slightly underplayed performance that both contrasts and complements Maggie Smith’s flamboyant turn.

And it is Maggie Smith that you will be mostly watching. Demonstrating all the emotions from dreamy idealist to dedicated teacher to fliratious lover to frustrated spinster to defiant victim. Every line of dialogue is delivered perfectly - every travel of her body is exactly appropriate to her character. She dominates the film without overpowering it. In many ways, it is basically a stage performance but she manages to accomplish it work in the context of a film. In the raze, you may not entirely adore her character, but you will certainly understand her. And that is what gigantic acting is all about.

I have seen The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie many times and have often found myself wishing that Maggie Smith’s quick-witted performance had been in a better film. But it’s hardly a poor one. Used and somewhat stagebound perhaps. But you forget all that whenever Maggie Smith is on the conceal.

First you must understand that I am not an easy critic, I recognize all the runt things in a movie that others might overlook or fair decide to ignore.
That said, this is a gleaming (but not perfect) movie.
The acting of Maggie Smith is righteous beyond words. She starts out as a heroine, objective the type of teacher we would all like to have. As the movie progresses, the character of Miss Brodie moves closer and closer to a breakdown. What’s shiny is that this distress is certain to the viewer, but not to Miss Brodie herself, a most difficult task for a screen-writer, a director, and an actress to do.
The depiction of Edinburgh in the 30’s is so realistic that you really feel as though you’ve been establish into some sort of time machine- this is one of my approved aspects of the film, and also the beautifully haunting soundtrack. I truly adore when a film is able to transport you to another set and time and form you truly feel it.
The movie is quite different from the book to be definite (aren’t they all? ) but the place filming, and the truly shining acting overcome any drawbacks.
The film is also valuable for the performance of Pamela Franklin.
If you’ve only seen her in Disney movies, be prepared for a very different Pamela Franklin this time around.
I have watched this film over 10 times now and detached do not fully understand it. Is Miss Brodie the Miss-understood heroine? Or is she truly a hazardous person intent on using others so that she can live vicariously through them? Is the film a warning to all of us that despicable lurks where least expected? Or is it a trudge inside our souls, in those deep somber moments where we have all been betrayed by our dearest and most trusted friends?
Watch the film and choose for yourself. Either scheme, you will have a pleasing crawl thru the very mind and soul of a most complex character, in a nostalgic era, brilliantly portrayed by Maggie Smith.

From 1949 to 1956, the boisterous team of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis starred in 16 feature-length comedies, which vary in quality from undeniably hilarious to absolutely forgettable. AT WAR WITH THE ARMY (1950) falls closer to the latter category. This lackluster wretchedness was their first starring vehicle, released after MY FRIEND IRMA (1949) and MY FRIEND IRMA GOES WEST (1950), in which they had glorified supporting roles.

Though released by Paramount Pictures, AT WAR WITH THE ARMY was an independent production, and a threadbare one at that, which explains why, at times, it looks like Dean and Jerry are appearing in someone’s home movie. Based on a stage play-and looking every bit like a dingy, little, photographed stage play-this alleged military farce weakens the impact of the nutty duo by continually separating them. The movie springs to life when they’re allowed to declare, dance, and do imitations, but these opportunities are few, as the place sticks rigidly on its course to Dullsville. There are enough pleasant moments to satisfy their devoted fans (Jerry’s delicate comical on the occasions where he’s allowed to nick loose, and Dean has nice duet with Polly Bergen, “You and Your Dazzling Eyes”), but if you’ve never seen this pair in action, there are far better M&L comedies awaiting DVD release (LIVING IT UP, SAILOR BEWARE, ARTISTS AND MODELS, and Disquieted STIFF, to name a few) .

Alpha Video’s copy of AT WAR WITH THE ARMY is one of the better editions available, although like the marginally trustworthy Digiview release, it’s missing the cast credits after the “Extinguish” title. Arguably, the best edition of this film available is the one on Madacy Entertainment’s “Hollywood Classics Collection” tag. Madacy’s print isn’t as racy as the Digiview version, but it does have the ruin cast credits. Madacy also makes their edition more handsome to consumers by including two 1950s newsreels and outtakes from the Abbott and Costello films IT AIN’T HAY (1943), PARDON MY SARONG (1942), and THE Roguish NINETIES (1945) .

This one was a nice surprise. I had already seen the movie, and had enjoyed it, but didn’t know what to question from this DVD. Face it, Madacy dosen’t nefarious too high with collectors as far as describe quality goes! But here they surprise me with a print thats scratched, but extremely sure. And a bonus of newsreel footage from the year in capable condition, as well as a blooper reel (not from “Army”)? Things are looking up here, and at six bucks and change, some value as well! Fans should survey this one out.

Both my toddler and I loved this video. For my toddler, it has several advantages: one, it’s an hour long and can replace Sesame Street itself if you missed it that day (fair fetch an Elmo’s World tape to follow up) . Two, it has a tubby cast that includes the newer characters who weren’t around in my day: Elmo, Telly, Prairie Dawn and many others fabricate an appearance. Third, the celebrity cameos are few and encourage the storyline well.

As a weak puppeteer and avid Sesame Street fan, I really enjoyed watching it myself. It has old-fashioned clips that have almost disappeared: the unusual “Rubber Ducky” with the floating bubbles, “C is for Cookie,” “I’m an Aardvark, and I’m proud,” and some of the letter and number clips you might remember as a kid. I also liked that the storyline was filmed outdoors, making the production values somewhat better than other Sesame Street videos. Having a store of all the “notable” songs is really useful, too.

Enjoy this video with your kids - and explain them about the “olden days” when Snuffy was an imaginary friend of Spacious Bird’s and Ernie grew critters - what were those things called? - in his window box.

Watching this video is very similar to watching an episode of Sesame Street on PBS…only not exactly the same Sesame Street that’s on the airwaves today. It has musical clips from various episodes throughout the lifespan of Sesame Street and contains more clips of Bert & Ernie and Grover than you will peer in a typical episode in 2001.

It’s not objective a series of weak clips, however. The clips and unique material are woven into a narrative of Astronomical Bird looking for LaLa-ers for the display that the Sesame Street characters are planning. Not everything fits impartial good, but it is fun to search for and tell and dance to.

The most principal reason for my high recommendation of this video is the fact that my 22-month-old son is FACINATED by it. It may not be teaching him his numbers or his alphabet, but he is starting to try to exclaim along.

Not the absolute Best Video out there, but thoroughly delightful and worth the sign.

Hell has surely frozen over. “Pitch Gloomy” is a Diesel-powered movie– Vin Diesel, that is. As the menacing convict Richard P. Riddick, Diesel gives a ferociously lustrous and charismatic performance, backed up by Twohy’s surprisingly nuanced script. You’ll reach to root for Riddick as the movie wears on, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll like him.

Radha Mitchell is also splendid as the novice pilot Fry, battling inner and outer demons as she tries to own the survivors together; Cole Hauser does a nice turn as Riddick’s captor; and the pretty supporting cast includes Keith David as a Muslim cleric (a refreshingly obvious portrayal of Islam) and “Farscape”’s always-excellent Claudia Shadowy.

“Pitch Shadowy” is an embarrassment of riches for sci-fi fans: characters who continually surprise you, creepy creatures left mostly up to your imagination, and a stripped-down memoir that moves at a breakneck perambulate. Perfect popcorn entertainment– honest be certain you don’t turn _all_ the lights off before you view it…

Pitch Sunless was arguably one of the most overlooked films of the early year. Although the setting of the film could seem routine to a casual viewer(region travelers stranded and bickering on a hostile planet infested with alien nasties), director David Twohy’s amazing consume of color and stylistic flourishes more than makes up for any trivial complaints.

Forget all the negative hype surrounding Valkyrie, because I snarl you it is counterfeit. Bryan Singer has made a well-crafted thriller that kept me and my family on the edge of our seats until the demolish - even though we all know what the story’s discouraged outcome. Also, many tabloids were making this out to be the movie that would permanently cripple the career of Tom Soar. This is entirely unfounded. Fly delivers a stunning performance, and this hatred I can only hold is related to his rather unusual personal life. Tom Coast is as strong of an actor as he ever was, and I won’t let something like turning Oprah’s couch into a playground screech the fact that the man has talent, and is a truly passionate actor (and seriously, he does have a exiguous resemblance to Stauffenberg) .

The movie is based on the last of fifteen known attempts on the life of German dictator Adolf Hitler (I’m positive everyone will have him in a nice “Five Most Infamous People” list), and has Tom Flee playing Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, who of course was the key player in the assassination attempt. Ultimately this attempt failed (as we all know Hitler would die by suicide nine months later), but that doesn’t sustain Valkyrie from being an addictively engrossing film.

Every member of the cast does their piece well, not jockeying for superiority in any draw. More importantly Fly does not grandstand in this movie, fading in with the rest of the cast, rather than trying to stand above them like you’d request, given his past films. Coast gives a performance similar to 2005’s War of the Worlds, where he does a superb performance, but he never tries to overpower the other members of the cast. In Valkyrie Tom Fly is a being a marvelous team player, not trying to engage any glory, and never once does he overact the piece.

Using very small CGI Valkyrie is also a incredible film to seek at. The vintage automobiles and aircrafts do this film have a obvious authentic flair that few other war films have (CGI looks like it was only primitive for the climatic assassination attempt) . I know several Germans in proper life, and they do not sound very “German” when they affirm in English, because the accent is not intended for the English language. I personally feel the desire for English being spoken in German accents comes from decades of WWII films where we’ve categorized every-single member of the German army, and by them speaking in that accent only is to cliché them and separate them from American audiences. They can verbalize in German accents, but only if they’re speaking in German, because if they aren’t it seems to be a tool to retain your approved American moviegoer from relating to the characters.

Don’t go into Valkyrie expecting to be greeted with a horrifically poor film that you will be able to wander fun at with friends. The movie has been released, and I feel the rumors, and negative hype of been proven decisively fallacious. This isn’t a movie to demolish Cruise’s career, but it won’t wait on him derive cherish in the American community either (as previously mentioned he doesn’t shine so worthy as mix in with the rest of the cast) . It is a very exquisite dramatization of a just event, and I don’t reflect the material could have been handled grand better, even with a elephantine German cast, because Singer’s style and map of conveying this memoir are all very well-done.

Go out and like this dramatization of one of the darkest periods of human history. It is worth every second of your time, and all though it isn’t Oscar-worthy it is certainly worth two-hours of your time.

All Historical Dramas faithful to the loyal events rush the risk of being dry and humdrum. Fortunately, although it is a bit dry here and there, the producers of Valkyrie didn’t stray too far in that direction. The record is well-told, and I did not feel that it dragged or got into excessive and unimaginative detail at any point. If you are a student of WWII, and particularly this renowned failed attempt to kill Hitler, you will be happy with the quality of the film, the acting, and the film’s faithfulness to facts and to the tone of the times. The film brings forth many details of which I was not aware, and the historical facts I know-of from past research are accurately portrayed.

It is determined computer graphics are old extensively in this film, since many of the scenes could not have been filmed in any other intention, more than 60 years after events took situation. The special effects are for the most portion well done, and are not intrusive - clearly veteran only as needed to serve the tale instead of being an excuse to show-off a studio’s CGI capabilities.

As for acting, this anecdote was an profitable vehicle for Tom Soar. The rest of the cast is phenomenal. I was amazed at the number of familiar and respected actors and actresses that appeared in relatively minor roles throughout the film. Not a single performance was less than I would quiz from such a cast.

The film is not a light-hearted one, nor does it demolish well for most of the characters. There are several bloody scenes, but none of the violence is gratuitous. As such, this is a film that will be appreciated primarily by those keen in the history of WWII, or are solid Tom Fly fans. I am well gay with the film as a whole, and feel the destroy product meets the goals of both the producers and their intended audience. I’ll give it Five Stars.

Well, after WWE has already released anthologies on their other 3 major events…it’s time for the final one in their “Enormous Four” being the Survivor Series. This first Volume is from the early years of the event where the heavy focus was on strickly having effect team elimination matches with wrestlers teaming together based off approved hatred for others on the opposite team…to the point where there is only one match on here that wasn’t a designate team elimination match. Now withhold in mind that I’m doing my reviews from either the VHS version with the unedited event or a replay I caught off WWE Classics On Inquire.

1987 - This is going to be a treat for those who already have this event on video because if you remember, the VHS version was edited down to 2 hours there so here you catch the fat event. This was historic in many ways as this event marked the first ever Survivor Series and also the fact that this PPV ran on the same night as NWA’s Starrcade event (which caused Starrcade to be bumped off many cable networks) . The main event featured Andre The Giant, One Man Gang, King Kong Bundy, Butch Reed, Rick Indecent vs. Hulk Hogan, Paul Orndorff, Don Muraco, Ken Patera, Bam Bam Bigelow that’s remembered for it not only being the first time Hogan & Andre were in the ring for a match since WrestleMania III but the outstanding performance of Bigelow that puts a sign on the effect he’s gotten as “one of the best ‘big men’ in wrestling.” Also on here is the first ever 20 man effect team elimination match with 5 ticket teams on each team & other matches feature Randy Savage, Jake Roberts, Ricky Steamboat, Brutus Beefcake, Jim Duggan vs. Honky Tonk Man, Hercules, Danny Davis, Ron Bass, Harley Hasten…and an all womens match featuring teams headed up by Faboulous Moolah & Sensational Sherri. There were only four matches here but each one went around 20 mins. (the stamp went almost 40 mins.) and was all quality in their have true.

1988 - Unprejudiced like the 1987 edition, the 1988 edition was also edited down on the VHS (only the price team & main event were shown in chunky) so this is the first time it’s been released unedited. The main event here was Mega Powers, Hercules, Koko B. Ware, Hillbilly Jim vs. Twin Towers, Ted DiBiase, Haku, Red Rooster in a match that continued so many ongoing feuds (Hogan/Boss Man, Hercules/Dibiase) & storylines at that time (problems between Heenan & Rooster, the continued tease of jealously between Hogan & Savage over Elizabeth) . Also on here was the final WWE appearence of the Dynamite Kid along with the PPV debut of Shawn Michaels in a 10 man heed team elimination match that’s mostly memorable for what happened during the match between Mr. Fuji & Demolition & Powers Of Wound resulting in (to my knowledge) the first double turn in WWE history. Other matches include Rick Grievous & Harley Rush & Dino Bravo & Mr. Perfect & Andre the Giant vs. Jake Roberts & “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan & Tito Santana & Ken Patera & Scott Casey…Ultimate Warrior & Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake & The Blue Blazer & Sam Houston & Jim Brunzell vs. Honky Tonk Man & “Outlaw” Ron Bass & Greg “The Hammer” Valentine & “Perilous” Danny Davis & Dreadful News Brown.

1989 - This was a Survivor Series first as this was the first time they started naming the teams. One of the main events was the Hulkamaniacs vs. Million $ Team which was loyal disappointing since the match seemed heavily one-sided (even Ventura pointing it out on commentary) and the main showdown that was being built up here between Hogan & Zues being the contrivance it was (or wasn’t, depending on how you want to eye at it) . The other main event was the Ultimate Warriors vs. The Heenan Family that’s more remembered for the backstage legend with Arn Anderson and, more importantly, Tully Blanchard that ended up seeing Bobby Heenan wrestling here instead of Blanchard…however this was a immense showcasing of Anderson being the workhorse that older fans remember him for. Other matches include Roddy’s Rowdies vs. Rude’s Brood that was gripping down the commentary where Jesse Ventura kept attempting to say the name of Piper’s team but unprejudiced couldn’t salvage it correct, Dream Team vs. Enforcers that was a solid match, and the King’s Court vs. 4×4’s in another solid match that was highlighted by the interaction with Randy Savage facing off against Bret Hart. 1990 - This Survivor Series debuted three unique ideas into WWE with one turning out to be one of the greatest superstars in the history of the WWE. One unusual plan WWE introduced here was that the surviving faces of the elimination matches would meet the surviving heels in a “Immense Finale Match Of Survival.” Also during this PPV, a enormous egg that was seen on WWE TV for weeks finally hatched (to the crowd’s boos) to sigh the Gooblygooker (Hector Guerrero) . One of the main events here featured The Warriors vs. The Pefect Team which saw the Demolition vs. Legion Of Doom fight that longtime WWE/NWA fans wanted to perceive. The other main event was the Hulkamaniacs vs. The Natural Disasters in a solid match. Other matches included the Vipers vs. the Visionaries where history was made as it was the first time an entire team survived, the Alliance vs. Mercenaries in a short one-sided match, and a match with the Dream Team vs. The Million $ Team that had an outstanding battle between Ted Dibiase vs. Bret Hart but more importantly, this PPV featured the dominate debut of The Undertaker. Another mark to create on here is that eventhough Randy Savage didn’t wrestle on the card, he did develop an appearence for an interview.

1991 - The PPV had the nickname “The Gravest Challenge” in reference to the first ever non-elimination match as Hulk Hogan defended the WWF Championship against the then-undefeated Undertaker that saw Ric Flair accomplish an appearence leading to Taker winning his first WWE Championship. The other main event on here was the Legion Of Doom & Stout Boss Man vs. Natural Disasters & I.R.S. which was as top-notch as you expected it to be with the bigger memoir being that after teasing Randy Savage of being reinstated & returning to the ring against Jake Roberts in this match…WWE decided to unprejudiced take Jake Roberts from this match and believe off their match for the “Tuesday In Texas” PPV reducing both men’s roles on this present to honest having an interview. This event also marked the WWE PPV debut of Ric Flair (pay Actual Stop attention to what belt he wears to the ring…you’ll gather a chuckle out of it) in the match of the night with Ted DiBiase, Mountie, Warlord vs. Roddy Piper, Bret Hart, British Bulldog, Virgil that was filled with comedy, brawling, and straight wrestling (with one very comedic moment between Piper & Sherri) that was only afflict by how the match ended. Other matches on here include “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan & Sgt. Slaughter & “El Matador” Tito Santana & “Texas Tornado” Kerry Von Erich vs. Colonel Mustafa & Hercules & The Berzerker & Skinner that was a one-sides squash with this becoming the second time an entire team survived….and Rockers & Bushwackers vs. Beverly Brothers & Sinful Boys that was all about the continued tease of problems between Shawn Michaels & Marty Jannetty. This edition of the Survivor Series was is easily the worst edition on this station as this PPV was really honest an informercal to promote another PPV that WWE was having less than a week later. The two main attractions that people wanted to view for this event were nothing more than bait to have you turn into that event & WWF seemed to set aside more focus into that “Tuesday In Texas” event than their yearly tradition of Survivor Series because alot of the matches weren’t as valid in quality as the years before with some booking that impartial looked boring in the demolish. At least watching this on tape years later, you know what these place twist are & how the event shaped up afterall but this year’s Survivor Series was unprejudiced a dumb disappointment.

So overall, if your a heavy fan of the elimination matches then this is the station for you to check out as the first three years were valid quality while the 1990 edition was solid with some questionable booking when it came to some of the eliminations and the 1991 edition was venerable minus the opening elimination match & Taker/Hogan for the WWE Title so I recommend this volume.

Overall, this was a radiant agreeable place, but I noticed one small change on the 1989 SS dwelling, one that I only noticed because I have the PPV version on VHS from years wait on and sued to notice it all the time, to the point that I nearly memorized some of the commentary. The pre-match interviews with The Crude Brood and The Ultimate Warriors are NOT the same ones from the PPV. While I at first conception they were edited, it was definite they aged different takes from the ones shown 20 years ago - confirming what I contemplate many of us already knew, that most of the interviews are scripted and pre-taped.

Seeing how no one except another guy who set a review on here that I can barely understand, I idea I would give my 2 cents. I have attained a bit of information about these movies. I saw my first Deep Vision 3D film in high school attend in 2001 in theaters. I have been crooked since then and loved these 1970’s movies because of the “former school” survey, soundtrack, and that they were in 3D. I have not seen Dark Lolita (Wildcat Women) in the theater, but I saw Disco Dolls in Hot Skin and the Lollipop Girls in Hard Candy in 3D a few years befriend. I am assuming that since you are enthusiastic in this DVD review because you saw it originally in the 1970’s, you like 3d films, or your like me and you relish the obsolete lost midnight obscure classics.

I managed to track down the director of the Deep Vision movies and he was very kind in informing me on some info on how they were made. Basically, Deep Vision was started by Steve Gibson in 1970 with his assistant Arnold Herr. Steve told me about some of his movies he made and how in this movie the exploding car scene did not work unprejudiced factual and the model car landed between his legs when it was region to explode. Ouch, for any dude to have something descend from a roof between your legs! Luckily it didn’t explode then. I give Steve props for making this movie not only with his possess money, but because this must have certainly been a challenge. Filming porn in California when this was made in the 1970’s was illegal and it was probably hard to score actors and locations (especially for the shoot outs) . Though these aren’t the best movies, I happen to relish them for some unique reason, perhaps for nostalgia sake. You also have to understand that these were made in a time were porn had to contrivance in people with a myth and not only unbiased sex (this was before amateur internet and VCR/DVD porn) . These were produced by one guy with the serve of his assistant. Steve did most of the shooting, writing, developing film, and editing by himself. So, please understand this is not some broad studio production, but instead your seeing someone’s personal work (in terms of legend and video) .

Black Lolita was the modern title of this movie and there are 3 versions “floating around” (Shaded lolita- modern hardcore; Awful Lolita- some hardcore slice out; & Wildcat Women- The R rated version) . From what I understand, Wildcat Women has some film spliced from each of the previous versions, so don’t quiz the continuity to be tremendous.

On to the story:

The chronicle is about a girl named Lolita who seeks out revenge on the Buddha who kills her uncle (a shop owner) because one day he decides not to pay the thugs that go around collecting money for the Buddha for some reason. Lolita finds some friends to remove on the Buddha and they fetch some more aid from a guy who spies on his hideout. The anecdote doesn’t fabricate a lot of sense, but you kind of have to unprejudiced go with it. The spot does stir a bit in the middle, but it is peaceful a fun movie elephantine of one liners you will be repeating for a while. There are some chases, sneaking around, people making out, and driving scenes. I adore how the Buddha has David Cassidy hair and that silly white outfit (You’ll glance what I mean) . Lolita also appears to be played a few different actresses as she looks different in various scenes (unless I’m crazy, which I may be) .

Overall, the shoot outs, 3d car chases, and soundtrack effect this worth owning. Like I said before, don’t query this to be some enormous production movie. But, if you are a fan of Boogie Nights and the dilapidated lost films of the 70’s, this is definitly worth picking up. Hopefully one day they will release the hardcore recent version to DVD.

Also, for the best 3D… seek this at night in a dusky room with the brightness up and you will have to mess with the color and tint to produce it watch objective suitable. Try to halt it somewhere in the sincere movie (not the demo at the beginning) and adjust it to where the blue matches with your glasses.

Most importantly…. Delight In this lost classic with a few beers and don’t steal it too seriously because it is what it is! As the archaic saying goes “porn may not have a future, but it had a past”

Upon popping the dvd in and program beginning, I belief…oh crap I wasted seven bucks. It starts with a very basic menu and program begins with some very unpleasant animation. A disclaimer also appears stating that some of the film was pulled from archived sources and may be awful quality. Yikes…..

Summary: Expansive (but dated) animation, stereo sound, good-to-great episodes, and lots of extras invent vol. 4 totally worthwhile if you’re familiar or tantalizing about the demonstrate. The chapter stops are at logical points in the episodes, and packaging is regain, and the artwork by Alex Ross is Extraordinary!

A mix of camp, action, soap-opera, and melodrama, this fourth collection is probably a trustworthy state to initiate picking up the series if you’ve been waiting. Any background info you need can be gotten from searching the internet for “gatchaman”.

By this point the series the viewer is familiar with the character types of each member of the science ninja team, and now their relationships are explored. The series begins to stray from the 3-act formula of Monster attacking, Gatchaman coming up with a belief, then running off to fight the Monster. In the Jigokiller episodes, we peer the team wrestle a weighty issue: Put Jun and allow the Jigokillers to withhold up their murderous spree, or allow them one selfish choice (saving her) in light of all the estimable they’ve done so far. Ken is especially conflicted, and his emotions (and the rest of team’s) are very trusty. We also perceive a bit more of Red Impulse, the character with a unique connection to the team, and a very dated create of motivating them! In Volume 5 we should end the chapter on Red Impulse, so pay attention now! In these episodes we’re also shown more about Galactor…what happens to those who try to leave the defective organization, and some of the mysteries of Berg Katse!

My catch on the extras: The Edwin Neal (Berg Katse) commentary on Vol 7 left me flat–Katse is arguably the best character of the series, and Neal does a decent job of voice-acting him. I’d be keen in what he view of the unusual Japanese voice-actor’s (T. Mikio) performance, what he notion of the series, how familiar he was with the account, etc… Mikio was one of the better of the unusual assert actors, and played considerable more melodrama, which I idea did a titanic job of showing Katses hormone swings–listen the the Japanese language track on the DVD and behold what you mediate!

-Vol 8 includes a commentary by Sarah Alys Lindholm (Senior Translator) . Like many of the commentaries, she barely comments on the episode at hand, but she stays on the topic of Gatch considerable better than a lot of the actors and I was fascinated by it! First, I imagined the senior translator as being Japanese, but Sarah is from Minnesota and has red-hair! I wish we had a recount! Second, she mentions how tongue-in-cheek the modern japanese was. We collect lots of it (Romina and Julia as star crossed lovers–where’d those names near from? ), but she lets us know how remarkable more got filtered out. And finally, she mentions that they (ADV) is working with Sandy Frank (the people who first dubbed Gatchaman, editing and releasing it as Battle of the Planets in the US) and implies Sandy Frank mild has some control over the translations and transliterations… entertaining.

-The extra’s disc is a nice touch, and certainly makes it worthwhile to catch the collector’s status rather than the individual DVD’s. As each on focuses on a character, these extras are Jinpei specific. Jinpei’s text biography is obliging since he hasn’t gotten a lot of face-time yet, and he’s the most cartoony of the team. The audition footage is stout, as always, because you can notice how different people had different takes on Jinpei. Luci Christian’s (Jinpei) interview is good; she describes the process of getting hired, her assume on the character, and the series. The Gatch “Shwagg” piece was a bit of disappointment to me–it was mostly british coloring books and comics. That was actually enchanting, but the whole thing was only a few minutes long, and I KNOW there must have been more material out there for them to place in! The Manga funny has substantial art and a decent chronicle.

-The extras actually did something fresh this time… they really got me fervent in the spotlight character! An orphan saved by Jun, Jinpei came from a mysterious mountain village that with mysterious connections to a ninja clan. Luci’s interview, the biography, and the sketches build Jinpei’s motivations and choices into focus, and revealed a novel layer to the series. It’s easy to be captivated by Joe, Katse, and Ken (in that order, IMO) and I’m overjoyed they’ve highlighted what a grand character Jinpei is.

This is probably the first residence I’d recommend to the casual Battle of the Planets fan–the plots have become more sophisticated, the animation is cleaner, and the characterization hits its rush. If you’re only going to engage one spot though, wait for the final volume of ADV’s release, as those episodes are by far the best of series.

I consider this is where all the action and all the intelligent events happen in the Gatchaman series. All the episodes on this Collection are worth seeing and they’re unskippable. The Box is dedicated to Jinpei [G-4] the colors of the disk are Yellow and such. I’m lovin ALL the voices, the people doing the voices are doing a waaaay worthy better job!

Collection’s 3 & 4 are equally the best hopefully the rest of the boxes will be as reliable as these 2.
